Life in the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds area is one of England's favourite destinations. It is famous for hundreds of honey-colour limestone villages in stunning unspoiled countryside.

Bowmore Lodge

Bowmore Lodge and The Lakes is nestled between Lechlade-upon-Thames and Fairford - both picturesque small market towns. The Lakes is within the Cotswold Water Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Lechlade is well known as the highest navigable point of the River Thames. It is a busy town with restaurants, pubs, antique shops, a butcher’s, wine shop and grocery stores - everything you would wish for.

River Coln

Fairford sits on a lovely stretch of the River Coln and owes its fortune to its location - an important coaching town on the old London to Gloucester route. Some of the inns and hotels are reminders of this. As with so many villages, its great glory is the parish church, St Mary's , which is a fine 'wool church' with a complete set of 28 medieval stained glass windows that tell the story of the Bible, recently loaned to the V&A for an exhibition and now safely back in place.?

You are within easy access of Cirencester, Cheltenham, Burford and Oxford as well as hundreds of charming villages, many of which have scarcely altered since the 16th and 17th centuries. There are few areas of the UK where you will see timeless unspoiled beauty. The Cotswold is a rich find for antique hunters. Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Burford, Chipping Campden and Cirencester are just a few destinations with a wealth of antique shops.

The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds has also become well-known for dining and its high quality artisan food producers. From the exclusive Daylesford Organic Foods to regular farmers’ markets in Cirencester, Cheltenham and Stow-on-the-Wold, food lovers will be spoilt for choice. If you wish to dine out there is a wide selection to choose from, all within an eight-mile radius of Bowmore Lodge.

A few of the award-winning restaurants and pubs include:

  • Allium, Fairford
  • The Swan, Southrop
  • Jesse’s Bistro, Cirencester
  • Made by Bob, Cirencester
  • Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, Oxford
  • Le Champignon Sauvage, Cheltenham
